Supporting complex needs through therapeutic design
The new Highgate East facility provides 78 ensuite bedrooms across five wards, replacing outdated accommodation at St Pancras Hospital.
Each ward offers direct access to outdoor space via landscaped, enclosed sky gardens. These secure terraces allow patients to enjoy the outdoors, helping provide a connection to nature.
Bedrooms are fitted to support personal comfort, with simple, low-stimulus finishes that balance safety, performance and visual softness to support recovery in everyday clinical settings.
Delivering safety to high-risk environments
Working with Ryder Architecture and BAM Construction, Hygenius delivered a full mental healthcare FF&E package tailored to the needs of the trust. This included a product mix of counters, fenestra and bespoke solutions, with finishes chosen for long-term durability, infection control and ease of maintenance.
Our joinery package was delivered across key areas of the facility—from reception and waiting areas, to bedrooms, lounges, quiet rooms, beverage bays and café spaces. The project also featured corridor USB storage walls and poseur benching further supported functionality and flow.
Award recognition for a future-facing facility
Highgate East has won the NLA New London Award in the healthcare category and been shortlisted for the 2025 European Healthcare Design Awards as a leading example of modern mental healthcare. The facility reflects a collaborative, clinically driven approach to hospital design—where recovery, safety and operational excellence are built into every detail.
