A £105m National Hub for Specialist Rehabilitation

The UK Government’s New Hospital Programme delivered the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC), and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust will operate it.

The NRC supports people recovering from life-changing illness or injury by delivering intensive rehabilitation earlier in the patient journey.

It also functions as a national hub for advanced research and training, with support from a network of 26 universities.

A Net Zero Future for the National Rehabilitation Centre

The NRC aims to become the NHS’s first operationally carbon-neutral hospital.

The design team adopted an all-electric strategy supported by solar panels and air source heat pumps. Landscaped terraces and gardens complement this approach, supporting rehabilitation while maintaining a strong connection to nature.

Spaces Designed Around 750 Patient Needs

The NRC welcomes 750 patients each year and has been purpose-designed to promote patient independence and recovery.

Facilities include rehabilitation flats, therapy zones, multiple gyms, and one of the most comprehensive robotics suites in the NHS — including Europe’s first 360° hoist for movement rehabilitation.

Located next to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, the NRC shares specialist facilities such as a hydrotherapy suite and immersive virtual reality, creating a rehabilitation campus rarely seen in the NHS.

Hygenius Expertise in Safer Healthcare Environments

Hygenius worked alongside Ryder Architecture and IHP to deliver this project and provided bespoke counters, bench seating, planter seating, and TV cabinets.

The team designed all elements to meet durability and infection-control requirements while supporting a patient-centred environment.

‘I was very impressed with your drawing production and review, the lead in times were significantly better and you turned up when you said you were going to turn up.’
