The new National Treatment Centre for NHS Highland provides ophthalmology and orthopaedic service to surrounding communities in a new and unique, purpose-built facility. As a result, waiting times for elective surgery procedures have significantly decreased for patients in the surrounding area and across the north of Scotland.

The National Treatment centre is part of 10 similar sites throughout Scotland that have been backed by the Scottish Government, helping to deliver added resilience to NHS services across the region. Going beyond the regional delivery of clinal services, the site also promotes innovation and research throughout the wider campus.

As you walk into the building, you are greeted with a large reception area and well-lit public spaces. Helen Robertson, Project Director/Centre Manager says the brand-new centre ‘feels healthy’ when you walk in. Located on the ground floor are theatres, the ophthalmology department with several consultation rooms, a waiting area and a sensory play area.

“Our staff are feeling real joy when they come into the building and that ultimately helps provide exceptional patient care.” – Ms Robertson, Highland Project Director/ Centre Manager*

The interiors feature scenes from Scottish landscape and nature which provide connection to the outdoors. “We believe this will be key to positively assisting with patient recovery and everyone’s engagement with the hospital.” – Mark Coffey, partner at Oberlanders**. Working with the teams at Oberlanders architects and Balfour Beatty, Hygenius provided the full FF&E fitout of the interiors including:

  • Bespoke reception desk
  • Nurse bases
  • Treatment rooms
  • 24 bedrooms
  • 5 operating theatres
  • Fitted seating in waiting areas
  • 13 consulting rooms
  • Storage areas
  • Staff facilities

We are pleased to have been involved in the delivery of this pioneering healthcare centre which will offer a world-class healthcare environment for staff, allowing them to deliver exceptional treatment to patients within Inverness and the surrounding region.

“This is a reflection of what today’s healthcare looks like. It is an amazing facility that offers a great environment for our patients and our staff.”

Sarah Compton-Bishop – Chair of NHS Highland*
